Our neighborhood got over 1,600 trick-or-treaters last year. Yes, you read that right, 1,600! We are surrounded by the most darling retired couples who live for Halloween giving out full size candy bars, cd’s and even full size ice cream cones. The ice cream cones are actually handed out by Mr. and Mrs. Claus (yes Santa Claus that is) at their fully decorated Christmas house. We get loads and loads of kids from all over town dropped off in our neighborhood to see what fun prizes will be handed out. I should note that my hubby and I were known last year as the dum dum and tootsie roll house. We are still a young family and let’s be honest, we can’t afford to give every kid a chocolate bar. This year though, we are going to be known as the teal pumpkin house and that just makes my heart so happy! <3 I thought with all of those kiddos trick-or-treating, there has to be some with food allergies. As an advocate for gluten-free living and someone who personally has celiac disease, it is my responsibility to help and advocate for those with food allergies as well. Who knows, maybe at some point my babies will need this kind of treat on Halloween.
To give you a little background, FARE’s Teal Pumpkin Project promotes the inclusion of all trick-or-treaters by raising awareness of food allergies commonly found in popular Halloween candy. By placing a teal pumpkin on your doorstep, you indicate that you are a place where kids can find non-food or allergy friendly treats. Last year, 50 states and 7 countries participated. This year, our friends at the Celiac Disease Foundation and National Foundation for Celiac Awareness have specifically promoted this program and encouraged all to participate. Even celebrities like Melissa Joan Hart are using their voice to advocate for this fantastic program. Seriously though, check out this post of hers. It made me cry. Thank you Melissa for using your voice for so much good.
We have taken FARE’s pledge, will you?
